Living in San Miguel

San Miguel is like an oasis in the desert. In the prevailing heat of Mexico, this little town up there in the mountains 6,000 feet above sea level has a mild climate that makes it the favorite of rich families from Mexico City and thousands of retirees and assorted expatriates from the United States and Canada. Living in San Miguel should be a bit better than the majority of Mexican towns and cities. Once a vital stopover when the silver trade was in boom before the bust in the 18th century, San Miguel was saved from becoming a ghost town by American soldiers with study grants who found out that their stipend lasted longer at the Instituto Allende and Bellas Artes.
