What Is a Hostile Takeover?

If you’ve been playing investing in stock market for quite some time, you have probably heard about rival companies buying each other out. Often times this is referred to as a hostile takeover and it is basically when one person or company buys more than %51 of a company’s stock. This results in control of the board and essentially grants the majority shareholder the power to hire and fire CEO’s among other things. Stock is extremely valuable when you keep the majority of the shares because you get to call the shots and direct the company towards your vision. This can often be a bloody battle and many times the shares are purchased at a very high premium to gain controlling ownership.
