An axon

An axon is often covered with a two sheaths. The outer sheath is thin called as neurilemma and the inner sheath is thick called as medullary or myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is made up of a glistening white fatty substance called as myelin. It is supposed to function as an insulator for protecting loss of electrical energy during conduction of impulses. Nerves, which contain the myelin sheath, are called as medullated or myelinated nerve fibres and which are devoid of it, are called as non-medullated or unmyelinated nerve fibres. HL7 training focuses on these issues in detailand helps proper coding.
